So, with valentines fast approaching we thought we’d enlighten you on the history of valentine’s day so when the day rolls around you can inform your valentine on where it all originated. You have probably heard it’s just a holiday invented by the greeting card companies however, there is actually a rather lovely back story worth knowing.
There are several stories that are associated with valentines one of the most famous being the story of Saint Valentine of Rome in which he performed weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. It later developed in the 18th century into a similar occasion like we celebrate today where lovers express their love for one another with presents such as flowers, confectionery such as chocolates and sweets and sending cards. In Europe keys are given to people in love (although I can’t say I’ve ever received one) as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the heart of the person who gave it to you. It’s all very romantic it seems; however, it would be true to say that it has been ramped up by the greeting card companies, but what holiday hasn’t?
